  • Christmas Gift Guide Blog Featured Image

Christmas time is the perfect opportunity to support independent and sustainable businesses by buying meaningful, ethical gifts that are not only beautiful, they also have positive impacts on the planet and the people that made them too.

As the effects of many of our shopping habits on our beautiful planet and its inhabitants are getting harder and harder to ignore, it’s now more important than ever that we slow down and shop sustainably. Of course, we’re not saying that Christmas should be cancelled by any stretch of the imagination, there’s nothing better than buying and giving gifts to the people we love, and seeing the joy on their face when they receive them, but here at Brighton Lace we’ve all decided that this year we’re going to Christmas consciously. Want to join us?

To help you all out, we’ve rounded our favourite Brighton Lace gifts and have got in touch with some of our favourite sustainable, small businesses to give you 8 unique, Christmas present ideas.

    Brighton Lace

What makes Brighton Lace the perfect sustainable Christmas gift?

Everyone loves gorgeous undies at Christmas – especially when they’ve been made by hand from the finest quality ethical fabrics!

Why is it important to you to shop small this Christmas?

I love to support local and small businesses because I’m passionate about finding unusual, slow-made gifts that have a story behind them – that have taken time and care to make. There is nothing like giving a unique present that you know couldn’t be found on the high street.

What are your top 3 Christmas presents from Brighton Lace?

Our top three sets for Christmas (besides our bestselling cashmere bralette and briefs!) are these three beautiful longline bralette sets – each with love by our small team here in Brighton.

#1 The black “Art Nouveau” longline lace bralette and French knickers contain 20% modal which makes them super soft & gorgeous against the body!

#2 The “Tangerine Dream” sheer lacies have been a huge hit this Autumn. We love the two-tone effect of the unique lace motif which we’ve recently learned was hand-designed by one of the last remaining UK lace designers in Nottingham.

#3 You can’t go wrong with red undies at Christmas, especially when they’ve been crafted from OEKO-TEX certified (sustainable) lace. We love how delicate and sheer this pattern is!

“The real change-makers and the designers making a real difference are the little guys, by voting with your money, you are giving local independent designers the chance to keep creating amazing products. I have to say as a small business too, I can guarantee that so much more care, attention, and love goes into creating those products. It’s also a way to ensure that your gift will be totally unique.”

What are your top 3 Christmas presents from Zola Amour?

#1 Gosh, well, that is a hard decision. I think everyday pieces are perfect for gifting at Christmas, so personally I would pick (and have done in the past) our t-shirts.

Why is it important to you to shop small this Christmas?

    Felicity JD – Brighton

Felicity makes fun, colourful, useable ceramics. Inspired by her heritage and travels around the world, she loves colours and shapes and uses them to handmake pieces that are both practical and attractive. She hand-builds from a lump of clay, a holistic process, where she goes on a journey to create a diverse and personal end product. We love that she always decorates the bottoms of her pieces, advocating that all surfaces deserve to look beautiful.

What makes  Felicity JD Ceramics the perfect sustainable Christmas gifts?

Each item is unique and made myself, by hand, from scratch with love and attention. No generic mass-produced plastic here. I also take commissions so can create personalised pieces with colours, letters and names that can be passed down to future generations. One of my most popular bespoke requests are my ceramic mugs.

Why is it important to you to shop small this Christmas?

It means the world to me when somebody loves one of my pieces and buys it. As an independent artist/maker every sale makes a difference financially to my family, and helps me get my work seen by others. So I like to support other small independent makers and artists while shopping for my family, as I know how much of a difference it makes.

What are your top 3 Christmas presents picks from JD Ceramics?

#1 Snowflake mug – which is especially Christmassy, and special as it is hand-painted with snowflakes made with real gold.

#2 Design your own mug – either you can design your own mug to give as a gift or give a gift voucher so that they can design their own mug. Choose the size, shape, colour and pattern, and I will hand make it from scratch, so it will be totally unique.

#3 Moon planter – I love the image and thought of the moon. It symbolises so many different things to different people and makes such an impact upon our planet and everything that lives here. Plus house plants, so chic right now.

You can find Felicity J D Ceramics on her website or on Etsy

    Pepper You, Brighton

What makes Pepper You the perfect sustainable Christmas gift?

“All jewellery is handmade by me and my promise is to always ensure as little waste as possible. Any offcuts of clay are saved and used for my ‘limited edition’ collection (one off designs) and I only make up to 5 of each earrings style at any time, meaning I will never have tons of dead stock which would end up in landfill.  My earrings are all wrapped in FSC certified tissue paper and put into a recyclable gift box so no need to waste time and resources gift wrapping yourself – woohoo!”

Why is it important to you to shop small this Christmas?

“Oh my goodness it is SO important! Fast fashion is second only to oil as the world’s largest polluter. My earrings are designed to last and hand made by me in my studio in Brighton. Not only are you supporting businesses that are ethically creating and producing, by shopping with small brands and independent designers you are automatically cutting down on the mass production of fashion by huge companies who create a huge amount of waste and whose working conditions are often unethical.”

What are your top 3 Christmas presents from Pepper You?

#1 For the bold and brilliant friend the Zara Statement Earrings would be perfect.

#2 For Your Secret Santa i’d recommend the Sally Studs

#3 For Your Best Friend you have to get the Jennifer Hoops

You can find Pepper You on their website or on Etsy.

They are also printed to order to minimise waste. We collaborate with local illustrators to create the designs which are a fun way to engage in gentle activism and spread messages about different ethical and environmental issues. Our zines are packed full of guides and inspiration and are printed onto recycled paper.”

Why is it important to you to shop small this Christmas?

“We are passionate about using our powers as conscious customers to empower and support people to make a fair living doing creative jobs they enjoy doing that only have positive impacts on people and the planet. Shopping small is a great way to do this, whether that’s supporting artisans around the world or buying from designers and makers in our area, helping put money back into the local economy.”

What are your top 3 Christmas present from Revival Collective

#1Through this distinctive design of our ‘No Planet B’ Tote Bag we are highlighting the pressing issue of global warming. Our planet is melting and we all have to take action. Whether that’s putting pressure on our governments and big corporations or making conscious swaps ourselves. Don this Tote-Bag and help spread the word.

#2 Our ‘Fashion Activist’ T-Shirt features a design inspired by the idea of fashion as a form of protest. We all wear clothes and accessories and many of us love to express ourselves through the clothes we put on and the way we style them.  This T-Shirt shouts loud and proud that we won’t stand to the side whilst the fashion industry continues to exploit the planet and the people on it.

#3 Our ‘Feminist Fashion Revival’ Zine is a conscious guide to being an intersectional feminist and sustainable fashion activist. It’s packed full of informative articles, inspiration, craftivism, guides and facts surrounding the intersection of feminism, fashion, ethics and the environment
